The Easter Holidays are a wonderful time to visit North Wales.
With self-catering cottages available for weekly, as well as short
breaks, even those of us with busy dairies can now get away for a
few days. Many attractions reopen at this time of year, often with
improvements or new facilities - so you might even be amongst the
first to try them out! The beaches are just as lovely, but often
less busy than during the summer months, and the weather is
frequently fine and sunny. With spring flowers abounding, and the
scenery as breathtaking as ever - why not blow the winter cobwebs
away with a dose of sea-air and/or country living.
Here are just few ideas to make your Easter Holiday in
North Wales exciting:
Get Arty & Abstract!
Now in its thirteenth year, the Anglesey Open
Studios event is the most wide-ranging arts experience on the
Island. Spread over the whole two weeks of Easter - with 60
painters, sculptors, photographers, filmmakers, printmakers,
installation artists and craftworkers opening
their studios to
visitors (or exhibiting in one of the 5 participating galleries) -
there's something for everyone. You'll find everything from cards
and prints to original works to buy, and venues that include:
studios, chapels, barns, sheds, galleries and even artists' homes -
where you might even get the chance to meet and talk with the
artist. You can always combine a visit to one of the studios with a
visit to the beach, as this year they're offering four free art and
landscape walks - for further details of these, there's a
downloadable file
here.
Get Agricultural!
Spring time is an important time of year for farmers, therefore a
visit to Foel Farm on
Anglesey is a super chance to make children aware of this - but in
a fun way! Lambing has already begun here in North Wales, and
there's nothing sweeter than watching these gorgeous creatures
frolic in the fields. With tractor & trailer tours of the farm,
a cafe and chocolate shop (just in case you haven't had enough
chocolate already), shire horses to meet, and mini trailer rides -
to name but a few of the activities on offer - get down on the farm
for some springtime fun!
Get Accelerated!
Described as the closest thing to flying, Zip World's 'Velocity'
experience, is the fastest zip line in the world - and the
longest in Europe! Easter is a fascinating time to visit the
mountains with snow often still about - but the sun too! As well as
an adrenaline fueled adventure, you'll be able to take in the
stunning views out towards Anglesey - or even as far as the
Isle of Man on a clear day!
Get Athletic!
Portmeirion village, set in the Snowdonia
National Park, was designed and built by Sir Clough
Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975. This Italian influenced
village is a beautiful place to visit any time of the year however,
for a slightly different take on it, why not take part in 'The 6th
Trail' race which takes place on 9th April? The 6km route takes
you through mystical and mythical trails, designated conservation
areas, and the 'Gwyllt' woods. Visit the 6th Trail
website for more information and to register.
There's also the Pwllheli Triathlon on the 27th March - a
sprint triathlon with distances that should be achievable for
everyone. You don't need to be an expert to take part - it's
the ideal event for people who just want to "give it a go"!
Get Aboard!
If it's still too chilly for the beach, but you don't want to be
cooped up indoors - a train ride might be solution. Here in North
Wales we have loads of different options including: The Ffestiniog
Railway, The
Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, The Snowdon
Mountain Railway, and Llanberis Lake Railway. Such a lovely, gentle
way to experience the stunning scenery we have to offer, from
mountains and valleys to coast and lakes. The Bala Lake
Railway even has an Easter Egg hunt on every train from Good
Friday to Easter Monday!
Get Acoustic!
A weekend music festival, set in the idyllic surroundings of Menai
Bridge, dedicated to the wonderful world of Swing, Gypsy Jazz and
Manouche Music. From Friday 18th through to Sunday 20th March. Click here
for more information and tickets. Food venues, workshops and
jam sessions throughout the weekend, go on - give it a whirl!
Get Antiquated!
Meet Children's TV favourite Mike the
Knight at either Harlech Castle on the 27th March, or at Caernarfon Castle on the 28th - where
he'll be making 'knightly' appearances at intervals from 11am-4pm.
With fun and games from the Middle Ages, and 'living history' also
on offer, why not add some Medieval excitement to your little one's
Easter weekend!
Get Absorbed!
