Can you picture it - the famous coloured houses? If you
have been to Beaumaris then you'll know exactly what I'm talking
about! The pretty pastel painted properties standing to attention
welcoming you to this beautiful seaside town.
Beaumaris lies at the eastern entrance to the Menai Strait, and
is possibly most well known for the unfinished structure which
stands proud at the end of Castle Street - I am, of course,
talking about Beaumaris Castle! Built on marsh land, the story goes
that the french builders called it 'beaux marais' meaning beautiful
marshes. It is thought this is how the name of Beaumaris came about
but as they say 'the rest is history'! You can learn a great deal
more about it by taking a stroll around the castle and it's
gorgeous grounds; it's owned and maintained by Cadw.
If you are lucky enough to have been to Beaumaris, I'm sure you'll
agree that the views seen from the seafront stretch as far as the
eye can see; from the Great Orme, across to the mountains of
Snowdonia and down the Menai Strait. They are utterly breathtaking.
If you've not experienced them yet - add a stay in Beaumaris to
your travel bucket list!
Not just famous for its historic landmarks like the castle
and Beaumaris Gaol, there is also a lot
going on for such a small village; from upcoming cinema nights at
the castle, to live music and the fantastic Beaumaris food festival (taking
place this month on the 10th & 11th!). The lifeboat
station is always worth a visit - why not pop into
the shop and support our local volunteers. In fact, if you fancy
venturing off dry land then Beaumaris is the place to be. You can
catch pleasure trips from the pier, such as the Puffin Island Cruises - just make
sure you take your binoculars! Beaumaris pier is also a favourite
for crabbing (I caught many a crab as a child) and it is lovely to
see families decorating the railings on a sunny day with buckets
brimming with the day's catches!
Not far from beaumaris is Penmon Priory and Penmon Point
Lighthouse - where you can practically touch puffin island (well,
it feels like it at low tide!) and enjoy the busy bird life or take
a rod and set up in the swells. Penmon is always a happy hive of
family activity.
If adventure isn't necessarily your thing and you prefer a more
relaxed break filled with fun and food, Beaumaris caters for all
types of foodies; there are plenty of places to refuel! For those
who love a bit of shopping too, you will love the mix of galleries,
jewellery shops, antiques, crafts, gorgeous gifts and beautiful
trinkets that can be found here! It's High Street still hold
reminders of the old fashioned seaside town from time gone by -
there is wonderful architecture featuring in its criss cross
streets.
Basically, Beaumaris is a brilliant place to aim for whilst
staying in North Wales! With all aspects covered, there is a beach
(albeit small), a prom and pier to stroll along, vistas to enjoy
and adventures to be had! If Beaumaris sounds like somewhere you
want to see, why not stay in one of our superb holiday
cottages so you can be right at the heart of all the
action? Don't just take my word for it, discover this Anglesey gem
and see for yourself all this popular seaside town has to offer its
many loyal visitors!
