Castelnuovo di Garfagnana
Mountain views and Tuscan RetreatsThe bustling mountain market town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, is set alongside the river Serchio, and is known as the capital and heart of the Garfagnana in Tuscany. Dating from the 8th Century, the town is now dominated by the 12th Century Rocca Ariotesca which overlooks the main square of the historic centre. The main square, or Piazza is a great place to stop for a coffee and brioche, an aperitivo with the locals, or a gelato and soak in the atmosphere. Any day is a good day, but if you don't mind it busy, then market day is Thursday morning when market stalls sprawl throughout the entire town. Arrive earlyish and pick up a little breakfast, and then meander around the stalls, maybe pick up a bargain, or watch the locals catching up with each other.
